Meeting IL AG Madigan

We look forward to meeting with Attorney General Madigan to discuss progress made since our Joint Statement last November, and to hear any and all ideas she and others may have that could help reach our shared goal of eliminating illegal activity from craigslist, while preserving all of the functionality and positive attributes that are currently enjoyed by the overwhelmingly law-abiding craigslist community of users.

Jim and the craigslist team. Your spirit of cooperation with law enforcement is commendable and the fact the traditional media does not cover this fact shows their bias towards “conflict and controversy” and never letting the facts getting in the way of a good story.

Keep up the good work, we in the craigslist community applaud your efforts and they do not go unnoticed.

While you’re at “eliminating illegal activity from Craigslist”, please think of being proactive in all fields and not by only focusing on adult postings because a professional in that industry has recently got killed!

There are more and more job postings on Crigslist which openly offer salaries which are under the minimum wage and such employers find their victims through your site as your system doesn’t block their postings.

Craigslist is a great free service and should set stricter rules for postings in return for offering the service for free. For instance, specifying at least an “approximate price” and a picture for items for sale, salary range for jobs (and not under minimum wage), etc should become a prerequisitive for all postings.

Craigslist should change to a service to help enforce the laws of land and not a free tool to break them! The excuse of “we don’t have enough staff and funds” is not enough anymore as we’re hearing more and more bad news in the news related to Craigslist.

Something should be done to stop criminals from using this website to hunt their next victims; it doesn’t matter if they are medical students planning to shoot women, pimps selling underage kids or managers hiring the desperate jobless and paying them in peanuts!

CL is doing everything within reason to try to be a “good neighbor” of every community where its sites are hosted. Sadly there are always some nut jobs that are going to use some service to do something horrible. Or as history proves, they will do it on their own. While I have no use for Erotic Services I do hope that CL will not bow down to those that wish to repress free speech. Best of luck.

  4. Caleb Says:

Have you ever thoughts of having volunteer moderators for the sections?
Maybe there should be more intense phone verification for the Erotic Services. None that it interests me.

I am troubled by the graphic porn advertisements that languish in generic discussion forums for hours, sometimes overnight. Since these ads violate your TOU, I am very much looking forward to your response to the AGs letter regarding your flagging system.

I support this solution from a previous commenter on April 22, 2009:

“JesusHusseinChrist Says: …You need to introduce site moderators, that are chosen among users, much like administrators in wikipedia. Those mods should be able to delete posts with one click, and their deletions should be logged and visible to other mods, so that bad mods can be demodded. Look into Wikipedia process on how they choose administrators.”

Seriously? Everyone just be quiet. It’s people like you that end up asking the government to come into our homes. When founding fathers were talking about banking institutes as evils the people would come to ask for.. those people are you.

Why don’t we just say.. that Craigslist is mostly used to sell stuff online; used laptops, beds, dressers, tvs, other small electronics. Wait a minute! No one’s paying TAXES on all that stuff! WELL!! That’s just a straight out injustice. How about we revamp the entire site, set everyone up with a paypal like system or ebay system where everyone must register, login and pay a percentage automatically to make sure they pay taxes on these sales.-Sarcasm.

That’s the bogus stuff people come up with down the line after continuous arguments with good intentions. How about.. CL has said they will and have been working with law enforcement and leave it be.

You know how easy it is for them to see the same thing you see? They’re not stupid. 100 roses = 100 dollars for call girls. Duh. Simple. So drop a line and keep a look out.

As long as there is a service out there for the people there’s going to be someone that finds a way to corrupt it.

Matters like these can be addressed outside CL without their (law enforcement and legislative branches) interference.

One, prostitution is illegal based on religious belief which should not be taken into account in law.

Two, as far as underpaid jobs- that’s what collectivism, unions, etc. are for.
Information to the right people can solve these things. Get the message out that no one should work for that little amount of money. Additionally, it really doesn’t matter what they’re working for in relation to living expense. The system is set up so that you’re making less for what you do compared to what it costs to live. Expenses increase on a day to day basis. People are lucky if they get quarterly raises much less yearly or whatever. Stupid.

Get information out. Work for it. Talk, discuss, but don’t hound a company to do what others need to be doing. They have a service others try to take advantage of. It is entirely up to CL to decide what measures to take. But you can’t have something so open without these kinds of things happening.

    Thank you,

    Morgan

Don’t give in to pressure from the government. The attorney generals need to concentrate on all the other crimes in their states and not go charging in on one incident (to get face time in the press) so they will look like they’re tough on crime.

  8. John Says:

Way to give into political pressure and not stand up for your rights or against the overreaching arm of government “authority” and thanks for supporting the retarded idea that what two consenting adults do together in private should be watched over by big brother since apparently we are all just property of the state as opposed to free individuals.

Thank you for allowing another ax to strike a blow to the tree of liberty.
