Earthquake relief in Haiti

Trying to ascertain the relative scale of the various relief efforts ongoing in Haiti, with an eye toward directing charitable contributions.

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) already has 800 personnel on the ground in Haiti, including many physicians, with 70 more staffers en route.

Oxfam has deployed 100 staff in Haiti thus far.

Care also has 100 in Haiti, with more on way

Red Cross has 15 personnel in Haiti, with 6 more on the way

Just wondering why Red Cross is not on your list to donate to? They have given one million dollars in support of Haiti so far.

Seeing a Thursday Associate Press article about the thousands of FEMA trailers in storage about to be put up for auction at near giveaway prices brings an idea to mind. Why not provide them to Haiti for emergency housing?

Tax dollars paid at least full price for them originally. Aid money will be used to build shelter on site in Haiti at probably more than transporting and giving the campers free would cost. Many campers size would fit easily into sea going containers.

Arkansas Senators Pryor and Lincoln are reportedly trying to halt the auction as unfair competition to the local manufactured home dealers and industry. Having other aid funds that would be spent anyway transferred to provide the campers would be non-competitive and maybe even stimulate the manufactured home industry and provide humanitarian aid at the same time.

How about the Katrina FEMA trailers from Hope, AR, giving hope to devastated Haitians for taxpayer bargain relief as well?

The Haitians deserve much more than disaster relief from the USA. It may not be known to this group that the Haitians achieved independence from France in the mid-1800’s, the only successful slave revolt in the history of the world. Afterwards, France demanded an indemnity from the new nation, which they calculated using the going sale price of every man, woman, and child as slaves on the world market. This enormous debt was imposed on Haiti and subsequently purchased from France by the USA (under what circumstances I do not know, but we all know somebody made a bundle of cash). Currently, over 80% of the GNP of Haiti goes to service this debt, thereby making Haiti the poorest nation in our very own hemisphere . A Google search will tell more, if not all.

I wonder if anyone knows if there are any plans to bring children from Haiti to other countries until the storm will pass? I m woried that if the food and shelter situation will not get solved soon, and the rain season is apporoching in four weeks, the first one to get killed/die will be the children. Let get them out from Hell and give them some sunshine. If not forever than just for a whilel

    One of my favorite charities is raising funds to direct more of their efforts toward this broken country. They are the FREE WHEELCHAIR MISSION located in Irvine, CA. Their mission is sending free wheelchairs to the disabled in developing countries. To date they have placed over 430,000 thoughout the world. They currently have 700 wheelchairs en route to the devastated area of HAITI and are seeking funding for additional containers of 550 wheelchairs each. With tens of thousands of survivors who will emerge from this nightmare many will be severly wounded, mobility will be limited if not impossible for thousands. Please consider making a donation on their website today so they can keep the wheelchairs rolling. ($59.20 per wheelchair) http://www.freewheelchairmission.org?msource={craigslist}

    PILOTS NEED TRANSPORTATION TO HAITI!

WE have seasoned pilots who can fly the ROBINSON 44 Aircraft who are ready to go the Haiti and do the work. ALL LAW ENFORCEMENT either retired or active. We need someone with the helicopters to donate them and any other resources to help us facilitate the trip.

We’re thinking from Atl to Miami to Cuba (who’s letting everyone in for the relief) to Dominican Republic and then Haiti.

We’re sitting here waisting away when we should be there! FORGET THE RUNWAY ISSUES WHEN YOU’RE IN A HELICOPTER! THE WHOLE ISLAND IS A LANDING ZONE FOR US!!!!!!!!!! SOMEBODY CALL SOMEBODY SOMEWHERE AND HELP US START SAVING LIVES PLEASE!!!!!!

I wish more people were like Mr. George Clooney. What he has done to help the Haitian people is just amazing. So many of the Hollywood celebrities are just phonies looking for publicity. George is one of the true greats.

  13. jrobinson Says:

Maybe everyone dragging there feet making decisions on what to do should go over to Haiti and stay for a month and see how they’d feel doing without and sick and hurt. Discusted with our goverment!

  14. tezgah Says:

I think we have to find real solution to Haiti. Because temporary solutions can postpone their sadness to future. Yes I believe we have to help them immediately but also long term. They are one of the poorest people in the world.

i have several relatives who were also vicitimized by the earthquake in Haiti. thank God that they were not seriously hurt. i hope and pray that Haiti would be able to recover soon from this disaster.

  16. dodacrazy Says:

I would like to say thank you to everybody involved in helping Haiti and please step up and give some help to other humans.

  17. bob Says:

Jam, How can you say the relatives are “victimized” by the earthquake. Last time it was an act of mother nature not people that are victims. Sorry that the people are having there and I would NEVER give money to the Red Cross, this is an NGO that gives very little back.

Check where your money really goes with these jokers. Been here for awhile and haven’t seen much fro the RC.
